DIY Bird Feeder: A Fun and Simple Activity for Seniors and Family Members
Create a homemade bird feeder together using simple materials. This activity is perfect for spending quality time outdoors and connecting with nature. Plus, it’s rewarding to watch the birds enjoy the feeder you made!
Materials Needed:
- Empty toilet paper roll or pinecone
- Peanut butter or suet (for sticking seeds)
- Birdseed mix
- String or yarn
- Butter knife or spoon
- Scissors
- Paper plate or shallow dish
Instructions:
1. Gather Your Materials:
Start by gathering all the materials on a table where everyone can easily reach them. If you're using a pinecone, ensure it’s clean and dry.
2. Prepare the Bird Feeder Base:
- Toilet Paper Roll: If you’re using a toilet paper roll, it’s already in the perfect shape! You can punch two holes at the top and thread a piece of string through it for hanging later.
- Pinecone: If you’re using a pinecone, tie a piece of string or yarn around the top of the pinecone so it can be hung from a tree branch.
3. Spread the Peanut Butter or Suet:
Use a butter knife or spoon to spread peanut butter or suet evenly over the surface of the toilet paper roll or pinecone. Make sure to cover it well so the birdseed will stick.
4. Roll in Birdseed:
Pour the birdseed mix onto a paper plate or shallow dish. Gently roll the peanut butter-covered toilet paper roll or pinecone in the birdseed until it’s fully coated. You can use your fingers to press more seeds into any bare spots.
5. Hang Your Bird Feeder:
Find a good spot outside, like a tree branch or a hook on your porch, and hang your newly made bird feeder. Choose a place where you can easily watch the birds enjoy their treat.
6. Watch and Enjoy:
Once the bird feeder is in place, sit back and relax! Spend some time with your loved ones watching the birds come and go. You might even want to keep a notebook to record the different types of birds you see.
Why It’s Great:
- Simple and Creative: This activity is easy to do and doesn’t require any special skills, making it accessible for all ages and abilities.
- Connect with Nature: Creating a bird feeder encourages seniors to spend time outdoors, which is great for both mental and physical well-being.
- Shared Enjoyment: Watching the birds together can spark conversation and create a sense of accomplishment and joy.
